Sputnik

A series of three unmanned spacecraft launched into Earth orbit by the Soviet Union in 1957 and 1958. Sputnik 1, launched on 4 October 1957, was the first man-made object to be launched into orbit around the Earth. For some time, the word "Sputnik" was popularly used to mean any artificial satellite.
